  • Overview

    Works with the Pharmacy Services Director and Pharmacy Operations to provide overall leadership and guidance to the clinical pharmacist team. Plans, directs, coordinates, and manages PHC clinical pharmacy programs as directed by Pharmacy Services Director to ensure successful implementation and execution.


    Provides leadership, direction, and support to the clinical pharmacy team:

    • Track, monitor, and evaluate clinical pharmacist performance on job functions and responsibilities as outlined in the clinical pharmacist job description.
    • Responsible for clinical pharmacist staff performance evaluations.
    • Promote performance improvement through coaching, constructive feedback, and corrective action when necessary to correct performance deficiencies.
    • Collaborate with Pharmacy Services Director to support clinical pharmacist professional growth and development through training, learning modules, and internal and external activity and program participation.
    • Collaborate with Pharmacy Operations in monitoring/assessing/improving pharmacy operational team’s (pharmacists and technicians) performance.
    • Promote and ensure PHC Pharmacy operations and activities comply with PHC polices and DHCS regulatory requirements.
    • Generate and analyze reports as directed by Pharmacy Services Director.
    • Nurture positive morale and organizational culture in the entire Pharmacy Department.
    • In the absence of the Pharmacy Services Director, works with the Associate Director of Pharmacy Operations to cover day-to-day duties and responsibilities of Pharmacy Services Director


    Treatment Authorizations Review (TAR) Oversite:

    • Monitor, track, and evaluate TAR key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement and implement activities against identified opportunities.
    • Develop and coordinate training to address TAR performance gaps and improve TAR production quality and efficiency.
    • Perform TAR evaluations and assist staff with drug prior authorization request and communicates with prescribing clinician, when necessary, to discuss a deferred, modified, or denied request.


    Organization and department projects:

    • Manage and support Pharmacy department projects as assigned by the Pharmacy Services Director to ensure successful implementation and execution.
    • Participates in cross-departmental and organization-wide projects to support organization-wide and department goals and initiatives.  


    Treatment Authorization (TAR) Reviews:

    • Participate in the prior authorization process as a clinical pharmacist


    Reporting/other duties:

    • Works with Associate Director of Pharmacy Operations on creating, updating, or revising clinical pharmacy related policies.
    • Address and resolve pharmacy issues and questions with external providers.
    • Support formulary management activities as requested.
    • Other duties as assigned



    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree required. A current valid unrestricted California State Pharmacist license required. A professional degree in pharmacy (PharmD preferred). Minimum three (3) years of experience in a managed care plan, hospital, or corporate pharmacy entity with duties comparable to those listed above and experience in administering pharmacy programs and managing pharmacists; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of three (3) years in a leadership role.


    Special Skills,

    Licenses and


    Knowledge of Medi-Cal program as it relates to pharmacy services. Familiarity with local medical and pharmacy communities preferred. Proven ability to effectively lead teams and participate as a team member. Knowledge of managed care pharmacy practice. Valid California driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance compliant with PHC policy are required to operate a vehicle and travel for company business.





    Ability to lead pharmacist team in a fast-paced environment to optimize operation quality and efficiency and support department and organization-wide goals.   Ability to address and resolve questions and issues independently while maintaining the judgement to seek assistance and guidance when necessary. Ability to cultivate a positive work environment through excellent interpersonal and communication skills.   Excellent organization and time management skills to successfully manage multiple tasks and responsibilities.

    Ability to use a computer keyboard. More than 50% of work time is spent in front of a computer monitor. Must be able to lift, move, or carry objects of varying size, weighing up to 10 lbs.
